KU announces Sellberg as first of five candidates for dean of university libraries

LAWRENCE — The first of five candidates to be the next dean of libraries at the University of Kansas will visit campus next week and conduct a public forum Tuesday, March 14. KU is conducting a national search for a replacement for Stella Bentley, who has announced plans to retire this summer.

The candidate, Roxanne Sellberg, assistant university librarian for technical services at Northwestern University in Evanston, Ill., since 1995, will visit campus March 13-15. She will give a public presentation and attend a reception from 4 to 6 p.m. March 14 in Alderson Auditorium in the Kansas Union. Additional candidates will be announced at least two working days before their campus visits, which will conclude April 14. Additional information about each candidate will be posted at www.lib.ku.edu/dean.

Sellberg earned her bachelor’s degree in history at Wichita State University, her master’s degree in library science at the University of California-Los Angeles and a specialist degree in academic library administration at Indiana University in Bloomington. She previously worked in various capacities at libraries at Indiana, the University of Nebraska in Lincoln and the University of Washington in Seattle.

KU hopes the next dean will begin work by August. The KU Libraries has a $15 million annual budget and 180 staff members and employs 250 students annually. The system contains more than 4 million printed volumes and more than 100 searchable electronic databases. KU Libraries catalogs 33,000 serials annually and houses more than 500,000 maps and 1 million photographic images. A $5.8 million library annex is under construction on KU’s west campus.

Search committee members are listed at www.news.ku.edu/2005/november/9/library.shtml.
