KU Lawrence campus closed, classes cancelled Monday for storm cleanup

MONDAY A.M. UPDATE: Gov. Kathleen Sebelius, Chancellor Robert Hemenway and members of the Lawrence legislative delegation are touring the campus and Lawrence community by helicopter at 10:30 a.m. this morning; a press briefing is scheduled for 11:30 a.m. at the Lawrence Municipal Airport.

LAWRENCE — To allow for continued storm cleanup during daylight hours, the University of Kansas’ Lawrence campus will be closed Monday March 13. Classes will be cancelled and only emergency personnel should report to work.

Provost and Executive Vice Chancellor David Shulenburger made the announcement Sunday afternoon after receiving a report on the damage to 60 percent of Lawrence campus buildings caused by Sunday morning’s wind storm.

Safety concerns about debris falling from rooftops and the need for access to clean broken glass, tree limbs and other debris off of streets and sidewalks influenced the decision to keep the campus closed.

Events on the main Lawrence campus also are cancelled. However, events at the Lied Center and the Dole Institute of Politics, located on west campus where storm damage was less severe, will take place as scheduled.

Emergency personnel are asked to park in the garages or on surface lots. No on-street parking on the main campus will be allowed.

The campus was closed to vehicular traffic Sunday morning and will remain closed Monday. Students who lived on campus are encouraged to stay at home, and pedestrians also are asked to avoid campus.

Classes and university business will resume Tuesday.

KU's other campuses -- Kansas City, Edwards in Overland Park, and Wichita -- are open Monday and holding classes on a normal schedule.
