Hall Center, KU Edwards Campus present final lecture in Abraham’s Children series

Reza Aslan

LAWRENCE — Reza Aslan, scholar of comparative religion and internationally acclaimed author of No god but God: The Origins, Evolution and Future of Islam will speak on “The Sons of Ismael” at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday, March 21, in Regnier Hall auditorium at the KU Edwards Campus in Overland Park.

Aslan has written extensively on Islam for many prestigious publications including The Los Angeles Times, The New York Times, Slate, The Boston Globe, The Washington Post and The Nation. He also has appeared on “Meet The Press,” “Hardball,” “The Daily Show” and “Nightline.”

On Tuesday evening, Aslan will address how Muhammad and the first Muslims considered themselves to be the true inheritors of Abraham’s message of monotheism and tried to connect to him through the story of Ismael, Abraham’s first-born son. The lecture will also explore Muhammad’s understanding of his prophetic role as being intimately linked to the Biblical prophets who came before him and his attempt to create a larger community of faith that included Jews and Christians — an ideal that Aslan refers to as ‘monotheistic pluralism.’

The Abraham’s Children series, designed to explore the shared heritage of Judaism, Christianity and Islam, provides an opportunity to better understand the connections between these three interrelated traditions while respecting and celebrating their differences.

This event is free and open to the public.
