Traffic booth to be demolished to make way for construction of gateway at KU

LAWRENCE — The traffic control booth near 13th Street and Oread Avenue will be torn down next week to allow construction of the Docking Family Gateway to begin, officials announced today.

A temporary booth will be placed near 14th Street and Jayhawk Boulevard. It will handle all of the functions of the current booth, and regulations regarding campus access will remain the same. The temporary booth will begin operations Tuesday, March 28, and remain in operation for most of the summer.

Demolition of the current booth will begin Wednesday, March 29, and construction of the Docking Family Gateway is scheduled to begin Tuesday, April 3.

Some rerouting of traffic will begin April 3. Southbound traffic on Jayhawk Boulevard will remain open. Northbound traffic on Jayhawk Boulevard will be detoured to the east at 14th Street, with the exception of buses. Buses will be allowed to continue north but will be flagged through the construction site. Some delays are expected.

The arrangements have been coordinated with the organizations providing bus service.

The Docking Family Gateway will feature a fountain with vertical jets of water in a round plaza with landscaping and stone signage. The gateway and fountain will be oval-shaped and about 20 feet tall, with inscriptions reading “The University of Kansas” and “Docking Family Gateway” facing north.

The project is being funded by a $500,000 donation from KU alumnus Jill Docking and her husband, former Kansas Lt. Gov. Tom Docking, to KU Endowment.
