KU announces Schaffner as third of five candidates for dean of University Libraries

LAWRENCE — The third of five candidates to be the next dean of libraries at the University of Kansas will visit campus this week and conduct a public forum Thursday, March 30. KU is conducting a national search for a replacement for Stella Bentley, who is retiring this summer.

The candidate, Bradley Schaffner, head of the Slavic division of Harvard University’s Widener Library, will visit campus March 29-31. He will give a public presentation and attend a reception from 3 to 5 p.m. March 30 in Alderson Auditorium in the Kansas Union. Additional candidates will be announced at least two working days before their campus visits, which will conclude April 14. Additional information about each candidate will be posted at www.lib.ku.edu/dean/.

Schaffner earned his bachelor’s in history and geography from Gustavus Adolphus College in St. Peter, Minn. He earned master’s degrees in history and library science at Indiana University in Bloomington. Before joining Harvard in 2004, he was a tenured librarian at KU for 15 years and worked as a librarian at Indiana.

KU hopes the next dean will begin work by August. The University Libraries have a $15 million annual budget and 180 staff members and employ 250 students annually. The system contains more than 4 million printed volumes and more than 100 searchable electronic databases. University Libraries catalog 33,000 serials annually and house more than 500,000 maps and 1 million photographic images. A $5.8 million library annex is under construction on KU’s west campus.

Search committee members are listed at www.news.ku.edu/2005/november/9/library.shtml.
