KU to host student diversity conference; poet to give keynote address

LAWRENCE — Poet Angela Cervantes will be the featured speaker at the University of Kansas Multicultural Resource Center’s third annual Student Diversity Conference from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday, April 8, in the Kansas Union. The conference is open to all KU students, as well as students from surrounding universities.

Registration for the conference, “We Are One Community,” will begin at 8:45 a.m. Forms are available in the Multicultural Resource Center, Office of Multicultural Affairs and on the Web at www.mrc.ku.edu. Cost is $10, and students should register in advance.

Cervantes, who earned an English degree at KU in 1994, has had her poetry featured in Urban Latino magazine and her short story,“What’s up with Dads and pork chop sandwiches?” is featured in the book Chicken Soup for the Latino Soul. She describes “pork chop” as a story about father/daughter relationships, friendship and the political history of Chicanos.

Her poetry also was recently selected to be included on the upcoming spoken word compilation CD “La Raza Spoken Here.” It will be released this summer by Calaca Press in San Diego, Calif.

Cervantes’ keynote address will be followed by breakout sessions on topics including: “Teambuilding Through Diversity” “Diversity in Action” and “Diversity Dialogue.” Sessions will be presented in one-hour formats to allow adequate time for interactive discussions.

Conference sponsors are the Office of Multicultural Affairs, Multicultural Resource Center, Diversity Peer Education Team, KU Memorial Unions and Coca Cola.
