KU design students, alumni take home visual communication awards

LAWRENCE — Students and recent graduates from the Department of Design at the University of Kansas were successful in the second annual American Institute of Graphic Design Kansas City Design Awards, also known as the A2 Awards, in February.

AIGA is a professional association created to stimulate thinking about design through ideas and information, the promotion of critical analysis and research and the advancement of education and ethical practice. The A2 Awards were created in 2004 to follow the institute’s mission to advance and promote the power of design in its economic, social, political, cultural and creative contexts.

The A2 Awards were juried by nationally acclaimed design leaders Hank Richardson, president of Portfolio Center in Atlanta, a graduate-level professional program for the communication arts; Michael Hodgson, co-owner of design firm Ph.D and a creator of visual programs and publications; and Margo Chase, founder of Chase Design Group. The A2 Awards recognized exceptional works created by students and design professionals in the greater Kansas City area.

“Our students worked very hard on their designs, from concept development to production,” said Andrea Herstowski, assistant professor of design. “It is a thrill that so many of our students excelled in the A2 AIGA competition; it makes us very proud of the work being done at KU.”
