KU masterís degree student wins two awards at theater festival

LAWRENCE — Robbie Jones, a Garden City native completing his master’s degree in scenography at the University of Kansas, won two awards at the Kennedy Center American College Theater Festival, held April 18-22 at the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts in Washington, D.C.

Jones tied for second place in the Barbizon Awards Competition for Theatre Design Excellence for his scenic design for the University Theatre’s production of “Popcorn,” staged in October. Barbizon Inc., is the premier theatrical supply house specializing in advanced lighting for professionals.

He also won an O’Neill Design Fellowship and will spend July at the O’Neill Playwrights Conference in Waterford, Conn. The Design Fellows observe and assist the process among designers, playwrights, directors and dramaturges at the famed Eugene O’Neill Theater Center, which since 1964 has developed more than 1,000 new works for the stage.

Jones is the son of Marlin and Marilyn Jones of Garden City. He graduated from Garden City High School, Garden City Community College and Southwestern College in Winfield.

Before attending the O’Neill conference, Jones is serving as production designer for “Trail End,” a feature film being made in Kansas in May and June.
