Curb replacement, paving projects will close portions of key streets around campus

May 31 update: Roads, parking lots to close June 2 for repaving

Sunnyside Ave. will be closed Friday, June 2 from Naismith Ave. east to Sunflower Road, and Illinois Street will be closed south of Sunnyside including parking lots 34, 61, 62, 37, 35, 38, and 17.  West Campus Road will be closed from Memorial Drive south to the Naismith/Crescent Road intersection and around the Chi Omega fountain.  These roads will close at approximately 6 a.m. and remain closed until asphalt paving is complete.  Normal traffic will resume on Monday, June 5th. As soon as the asphalt is rolled, parking lots will opened at various times during the day.

LAWRENCE, May 17 — Road and curb repair projects on the University of Kansas campus will result in the closing of various streets next week, including parts of Jayhawk Boulevard, West Campus Road, Crescent Road and Illinois Street.

Starting Monday, May 22, the west entrance to Jayhawk Boulevard will be closed as crews begin asphalt milling to prepare the drive around the Chi Omega fountain for concrete curb replacement and new asphalt paving.

During the milling work, West Campus Road will be closed south of the Memorial Drive intersection. Crescent Road will be closed east of Naismith Drive. North-south traffic on West Campus Road will be detoured to University Drive. When milling is complete and concrete demolition is finished, roads will be opened to two-way traffic. The drive around the Chi Omega fountain and the west entrance to Jayhawk Boulevard will remain closed.

Milling operations will move next to Sunnyside Avenue, which will be closed from Naismith Drive to Sunflower Road on May 22 and 23. At this time, Illinois Street also will be milled to south of the Lot 34 entrance. Access to lots 34, 61 and 62 will be delayed during the work on Illinois Street. After milling is complete, the road will remain closed until May 26 to through traffic at the intersection of Illinois Street and the Malott service drive to allow for a water line replacement project across Sunnyside Avenue.

When milling is complete on Sunnyside Avenue, the milling operations will move to the east end of Jayhawk Boulevard on May 23 to mill from Lilac Lane to 13th Street, or from Danforth Chapel to the campus’ east entrance. The road will be closed that day until milling is complete.

Asphalt paving work is scheduled for May 29 through June 2 during which time the west end of Jayhawk Boulevard and Sunnyside Avenue/Illinois Street will again be closed to traffic. After the Docking Gateway is completed and the traffic booth relocated, the milled portion at the east end of Jayhawk Boulevard will be paved.
