Graduation stories: Family moves from Ecuador to attend KU

Maria and Galo Salcedo

Maria and Galo Salcedo

LAWRENCE — For the Salcedo family, commencement at the University of Kansas will be twice as nice.

Galo Salcedo and his daughter, Maria, will walk down the hill together Sunday, May 21. He’s earning a doctorate in geology. She’s getting a bachelor’s degree in journalism and international studies.

The family moved to Kansas from Ecuador in 1999 so Galo could attend KU. He said he chose KU because of its impressive geology program. Maria and her brother, also named Galo, attended Lawrence High School. Both followed their father to KU. The younger Galo is studying business and will graduate next year.

It hasn’t always been easy for the Salcedos. Although they knew how to speak English when they moved to Kansas, adjusting to Midwestern culture took some time.

“You have to know how to work the system,” Maria said. “You have to be very proactive. No one’s going to come to you.”

Seven years later, it seems as if they never had any trouble at all. At KU, Maria and her brother are active in many organizations, including the International Student Association. All three work on campus.

After graduation, the elder Galo will return to Ecuador to teach geology at the university level and work as a consultant for the petroleum industry. Maria will attend law school at KU.
