KU civil engineering students win first place in regional Geotech contest

LAWRENCE — A team of civil engineering students from the University of Kansas took first place in a competition at the 2006 American Society of Civil Engineers’ regional conference April 27-29 in Columbia, Mo.

The seven students received first place in the Geotech Competition at the Mid-Continent Regional meeting by defeating teams from the University of Missouri, the University of Oklahoma and Kansas State University. The KU team was led by Robert Parsons, associate professor of civil, environmental and architectural engineering. This was the second year for this student contest and the first year KU students had taken part.

The contest objective was to design and build a miniature reinforced soil retaining wall using paper affixed to a poster board wall-facing as reinforcement. The KU team used strips of kraft paper taped to the poster board and embedded in the sand behind the wall. The wall had to support itself and up to 50 pounds more.

The intent of the timed challenge was to foster creative design, teamwork and sportsmanship. Teams were awarded points for a variety of criteria including the weight of additional sand the wall could hold, the least amount of kraft paper used in construction, the time needed for assembly and a project report.

KU will have an opportunity to reprise its win on home turf in 2007. The university was selected to host next year’s Mid-Continent Regional conference in April.
