KU honors top political science students at awards banquet, honor society ceremony

LAWRENCE — The Department of Political Science at the University of Kansas recently honored top students with awards and scholarships at its annual Pi Sigma Alpha initiation and awards banquet April 28 at the SpringHill Suites.

Forty-four students were inducted into the Gamma chapter of Pi Sigma Alpha, a national political science honor society. Members must have at least junior standing in political science and a 3.5 grade point average on a 4.0 scale in all political science courses. Cumulative GPAs for undergraduates must be at least 3.4 and for graduate students at least 3.5. Neither may have a course grade lower than a B.

The scholarships and awards offered were:
— The Emmett L. Bennett Scholarship for $3,000 to an outstanding junior in political science
— Four Gustafson scholarships, each worth $2,000, given to outstanding political science undergraduates
— Three Harley S. Nelson Family Fund Scholarships of $1,400, each presented to outstanding political science undergraduates
— One $1,175 Rhoten A. Smith Scholarship to recognize an exceptional political science student
— One $350 Ethan Allan Award and two $350 Eldon Fields Awards, all recognizing an outstanding graduating senior in political science
— Thirteen Walter Thompson Scholarships in amounts from $500 to $3,000, awarded to deserving undergraduate and graduate political science students, and one Walter Thompson Scholarship of $1,000, all recognizing study abroad students
— Five faculty Pi Sigma Alpha Awards to outstanding seniors completing departmental honors
