KU theatre and film department announces outstanding students, alumni awards

LAWRENCE — Outstanding students in the Department of Theatre and Film at the University of Kansas were honored with awards and scholarships recently.

The annual Stage Supper recognized theater students May 12 on the Crafton-Preyer Theatre stage. The Film Student Recognition Ceremony and Tensie Awards presentation was May 19 at Liberty Hall.

At the supper, Eric Avery, a graduating senior from Topeka, received the Kilty Kane, the department’s highest honor. Named for actor Jerome Kilty, the Kilty Kane is awarded to a student leaving the theater program who has contributed the most to the University Theatre.

Bill Russell, who attended KU in the early 1970s, was awarded the Alumni Honor Citation. A Broadway writer and director, Russell received Tony nominations for the book and lyrics for the critically acclaimed Broadway musical, “Side Show.” His first musical, “Sun, Son,” premiered at KU during the 1970-71 season.

Shirley Rea, a 1953 KU alumna, received an Award of Merit posthumously for her loyalty and support of the Department of Theatre and Film. Rea was the widow of theater professor and director Tom P. Rea. She died in Lawrence in late February.
