KU vice provost for faculty development to step down

LAWRENCE — A senior administrator who shepherded faculty development programs for 17 years at the University of Kansas will return to teaching, outgoing provost David Shulenburger announced today.

Sandra W. Gautt, vice provost for faculty development, will return full time to the faculty of the Department of Special Education in August.

As vice provost, Gautt oversaw faculty mentoring, instructional development, faculty evaluation and promotion and tenure processes for the Lawrence campus. She established the Center for Teaching Excellence and is responsible for converting a media services unit into today’s Instructional Development and Support department, which helps faculty create and maintain innovative teaching strategies and learning environments.

“It is with sadness that I have granted Sandra’s request to return full time to the School of Education,” Shulenburger said. “Many colleagues have her to thank for a smooth transition through their academic lives at KU.”

Richard Lariviere, who officially begins as KU provost June 1, said, “I regret that Sandra and I will not have the opportunity to work closely together in the provost’s office but I respect her decision. My admiration for the work of Sandra Gautt is considerable.”

Gautt, who holds a doctorate in special education from the University of Missouri-Columbia, was an administrator there when she took a leave to serve as special assistant to KU Chancellor Gene Budig in 1984-85. In 1989, she returned to KU as assistant vice chancellor for academic affairs and became associate vice chancellor in 1993, assistant provost in 1996 and vice provost in 2002.
