Watkins Scholarship Hall president selected as 2006 Campanile Award winner at KU

LAWRENCE — The senior class officers at the University of Kansas recently named Alexis “Ali” A. Bannwarth, a graduating senior from Independence, as the recipient of the 2006 Campanile Award.

The KU Class of 2000 established the Campanile Award to be presented annually to a senior graduating in May. The recipient must have displayed remarkable leadership, strength of character and respect for the university.

Bannwarth will graduate May 21 with bachelor’s degrees in journalism and political science. She is the daughter of David and Marlene Bannwarth of Independence and graduated from Independence High School.

During her four years at KU, Bannwarth has held several leadership positions at Watkins Scholarship Hall, including president this year. She was a peer educator and mentor for the Law and Society Thematic Learning Community and received the Outstanding TLC Peer Educator Award in 2004. She was on the steering committee that created the organization Kansas Connections: Helping Small Town Students Succeed. Bannwarth participated in the LeaderShape program in 2004, received the Jayhawker Yearbook University of Kansas Hilltopper Award in 2005 and was selected as a 2005 Ex.C.E.L finalist.

Bannwarth is a member of Phi Kappa Phi honor society and earlier this spring was named the Blackiston Memorial Graduate Fellowship winner for the KU chapter. She was one of 40 Phi Kappa Phi members nationwide to win a Phi Kappa Phi Award of Excellence in April.

KU’s Board of Class Officers selects the recipient of the Campanile Award based on a short essay on his or her contributions to KU and the Lawrence community and an interview with the senior class officers.
