Media advisory: Outgoing KU provost to cut ribbon on new transit buses for campus

Workers at Optima Bus Corp. in Valley Falls work on
one of five new transit buses they are assembling
for the KU campus.

WHAT: Ribbon-cutting on new KU transit bus as part of a community transit open house at the University of Kansas.

WHEN: Open house is from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Tuesday, May 9. Presentation by KU Provost and Executive Vice Chancellor David Shulenburger will be at 2:15 p.m. in front of new 35-foot low-floor transit bus. The bus is one of five that will be put into service beginning Aug. 14 when KU begins a free express bus service between campus and a new 1,472-stall park and ride lot on west campus.

WHERE: Plaza on Jayhawk Boulevard in front of the Kansas Union (Rain location: inside the Kansas Union).

WHO: Shulenburger; representatives of the Lawrence Transit System and the student-run KU on Wheels bus service; and the consultants for the joint Transportation Development Study currently under way between KU and the city of Lawrence.

Recent cooperative efforts between the Kansas Department of Transportation, the Region 7 Office of the Federal Transit Administration, the city and KU have resulted in $1 million in funding for public transit improvements at the university. The university contributed an additional $348,000. The improvements include:

— Construction of a 1,472-stall park and ride lot now under construction on west campus. The lot will be accessible at Clinton Parkway and Crestline Drive.
— A Park and Ride Express bus service that will shuttle students, staff and visitors between the parking lot and the main campus in less than 10 minutes. The bus service, which will be free and available to all riders, will make 11 stops on a looping route through the center of the main campus and west campus.

KU has already begun selling special permits to students, faculty and staff for the new park and ride lot. The park and ride bus service will begin Aug. 14. Fall classes will begin Aug. 17. More information and maps of the KU Park and Ride Express route and the park and ride lot can be viewed at
