KU law student receives award in national writing competition

LAWRENCE — Andrew Newton, a second-year law student at the University of Kansas, received third place in the Berkeley Technology Law Journal Writing Competition.

This preeminent competition solicits writing pieces from students across the nation. With his third-place finish, Newton receives a $500 scholarship.

Newton’s article, “Encouraging Willful Infringement? Knorr-Bremse Leaves Due Care in Patent Litigation in a State of Flux,” discussed patent reform.

Newton is the son of Mr. and Mrs. Roger Newton of Stilwell and is a graduate of Blue Valley High School. He earned a bachelor’s degree in electrical engineering in 2004 from Kansas State University.

Newton is a member of the Kansas Law Review. This summer, he will be a clerk at Snell & Wilmer in Phoenix, Ariz., and at Lathrop & Gage in Kansas City, Mo. Newton’s long-term goals include a career in intellectual property law, specifically patent law.

The Berkeley Technology Law Journal is a technology journal covering emerging issues of law in the areas of intellectual property, high-tech and biotech.
