KU field archivist receives Budig Distinguished Librarian Award

LAWRENCE — Deborah Dandridge, librarian at the Spencer Research Library at the University of Kansas, is the recipient of the 2008 Budig Distinguished Librarian Award.

Dandridge joined KU Libraries in 1986, working in the Kansas Collection. As the field archivist for the library’s African American Experience collection program, she is responsible for building and maintaining one of the largest archival resources on the subject in the state of Kansas.

Former KU Chancellor Gene A. Budig and his wife, Gretchen, established the library faculty award with KU Endowment in 2001. The award recognizes achievements in professional service and scholarship, as well as reputation among professional colleagues.

Lorraine J. Haricombe, dean of KU Libraries, cited Dandridge’s energy and passion for her work as causes for recognition.

“Deborah possesses a wealth of historical knowledge, professional experience and a collaborative spirit,” she said. “She works tirelessly and effectively to develop and preserve the African-American collection at KU.”

The award will be presented at the KU Libraries’ Celebration of Excellence, to be held from 5:30 to 8 p.m. Friday, Sept. 19, at Watson Library. The event is free and open to the public. RSVP to Courtney Foat at or (785) 864-3601.
