Journalism students win awards from Kansas Association of Broadcasters
LAWRENCE — Staff members from KUJH-TV, the student-run television station at the University of Kansas, received 11 awards from the Kansas Association of Broadcasters this month.
The association annually honors high school and college students’ work in radio and television. This year, awards were presented April 6 at the association’s Student Seminar in Topeka. They recognized work done during the 2008 academic year by current KU students or recent graduates. In addition to seven first-place awards, KUJH won one second-place honor and three honorable mentions.

— Christopher Brott of Kiel, Germany, who earned a master’s degree in fall 2008, for his enterprise news package, “Point 2 for the T.”
— Kendra Hall, a senior from Paola, for her hard news package, “Baker Wetlands.”
— Alex Dufek, a junior from Green Bay, Wis., for his work on the entertainment program Jayhawk Sports Talk Thursday.
— Justin O’Neal of West Des Moines, Iowa, who earned a bachelor’s degree in summer 2008, for his work on Jayhawk Sports Talk Thursday.
— Greg Shippy, a junior from Overland Park, for his work on Jayhawk Sports Talk Thursday.
— Nate Sito of Rocklin, Calif., who earned a bachelor’s degree in 2008, for his work on Jayhawk Sports Talk Thursday.
— Kyle West, a junior from Ellsworth junior, for his work on Jayhawk Sports Talk Thursday.
— West earned second place for his TV sportscast that aired Sept. 22, 2008.
— Courtney Condron, a senior from Leawood, honorable mention for her enterprise news package, “Medical Records."
— John DeVore of Coffeyville, who earned a bachelor’s degree in fall 2008, honorable mention for his work as producer of the Dec. 9, 2008, newscast.
— Paige Hendrick, a senior from Leawood, honorable mention for her work as director of the Dec. 9, 2008, newscast.
KUJH airs newscasts produced by students at 5:30, 7:30, 9:30 and 11:30 p.m. weekdays while KU classes are in session during the fall and spring semesters. The students serve as reporters, photographers, producers and anchors. The station and its Web site provide students with hands-on, professionally supervised work experience. KUJH covers news of general interest at KU as well as in Lawrence and Douglas County. The station broadcasts on Channel 31 on Sunflower Broadband in Lawrence, Tonganoxie, Eudora, Basehor and Piper.
Jayhawk Sports Talk, a student-produced sports program, airs live five nights a week. The half-hour program highlights athletics at KU and looks at issues related to collegiate athletics. In addition, students from KU’s atmospheric science program provide a daily weather segment.
Dick Nelson is general manager and news coordinator for KUJH. Terry Bryant, lecturer in journalism and media lab manager, oversees work on the Jayhawk Sports Talk shows.
