Trumpet major scores award for jazz composition

Andrew Linn

More Information

LAWRENCE — Andrew Linn, a senior in trumpet performance at the University of Kansas, was selected as the Undergraduate College Winner in DownBeat magazine’s 33rd annual Student Music Awards.

Linn, of Chesterfield, Mo, won for his original extended jazz composition “Out of His Element.”

Linn began studying composition in spring 2009 with Dan Gailey, director of jazz studies at KU. His winning composition was first performed in concert by the KU Jazz Ensemble I in November 2009 and was performed again at the 2010 KU Jazz Festival in March.

“I will never forget how wonderful it was to receive the DownBeat award,” said Linn. “I was astounded to realize that all the hard work I put into the piece didn’t go unnoticed. It would have never been possible had it not been for the generous support of both Dan Gailey and Bob McCurdy, who both allowed me to record with a great band. I would also like to thank my family for always supporting me in my life’s aspirations.”

As part of his award, Linn is mentioned in the June 2010 issue of DownBeat. Linn’s award is the 18th DownBeat Student Music Award the School of Music has received since 1992.

Linn is the son of Mark and Jennifer Linn. He began studying piano at age 5 with his mother, a composer and head of Education Piano for Hal Leonard Publishing Co., and took trumpet lessons for many years with Malcolm McDuffee, a former trumpet player with the St. Louis Symphony Orchestra.

Linn is a member of KU Jazz Combos I and II and KU Jazz Ensemble I. After graduating on May 16, he will attend the University of Northern Colorado to pursue a graduate degree in jazz studies.
