KU announces winners of annual Mathematics Competition

LAWRENCE — More than 255 students from 80 area elementary, middle and high schools were graded on problem solving and critical thinking at the Mathematics Competition held at the University of Kansas.

A total of $950 in prizes will be distributed at the Math Competition Awards Ceremony at 5 p.m. April 27 in 120 Snow Hall.

The competition, held April 2, was divided up into four age groups: third and fourth grades, fifth and sixth grades, junior high (seventh, eighth and ninth grades) and senior high (10th, 11th and 12th grades). Cash prizes will be given to the top three finishers in each age group.

Sponsors are the Department of Mathematics and the Information and Telecommunication Technology Center. The exams consisted of five questions that took 40 minutes to complete. Jack Porter, professor of mathematics, coordinated the competition.

The competition is held in conjunction with the mathematics department’s Mathematics Awareness Month activities. The theme for this year’s celebration is Unraveling Complex Systems. Bozenna Pasik- Duncan, professor of mathematics, coordinates the Math Awareness Month activities.
