KU Libraries to celebrate Snyder Book Collecting Contest winners April 14
LAWRENCE — University of Kansas Libraries will recognize winners of the Snyder Book Collecting Contest next week.
The contest was established by Elizabeth Snyder in 1957 to cultivate and recognize undergraduate and graduate students’ interest in collecting books.
This year’s 55th annual contest will culminate with a reception and viewing of finalists’ collections, followed by a recognition of winners and a presentation by John C. Tibbetts, professor of film and media studies.
The event will be held Thursday, April 14, in Watson Library, level 3 west. The reception and viewing of the collections starts at 5:30 p.m. and the presentation at 6 p.m. RSVP to firstname.lastname@example.org or 785-864-3601 by April 7.
Tibbetts, a noted film and music scholar and entertainment reporter, is himself a noteworthy collector. He gathered and preserved rare promotional materials for films from the late 1970s through 2000, including press packets and movies stills. He has also collected the many video and audio interviews he conducted with important movie and entertainment industry figures.
Tibbetts recently donated print and media materials from those collections to KU Libraries. The print materials will be maintained at the Kenneth Spencer Research Library and the media items will be freely available online via KU Scholarworks, KU’s institutional repository.
This year’s contest was the first in which media items, such as films and recordings, were eligible for inclusion on submitted collections.
