Obama’s senior adviser to discuss political advertising at Dole Institute event

More Information

LAWRENCE — Jim Margolis, President Obama’s senior advertising adviser, will be at the Dole Institute of Politics at the University of Kansas next week as a visiting fellow.

Margolis will be featured in a Dole Forum event scheduled for 7:30 p.m. Wednesday, April 13, at the Dole Institute. The program is free and open to the public.

“Margolis was at the forefront of a new revolution of political campaign advertising in 2008,” said Bill Lacy, director of the Dole Institute. “His leadership on Obama’s team resulted in a historic victory for the president. He has a long string of impressive successes, including guiding Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid to reelection last year.”

Margolis will visit classes and host a Pizza and Politics event for students and faculty during his fellowship as well. Pizza and Politics is 11 a.m. Thursday, April 14, at the Adams Alumni Center.

In presidential politics, Margolis served as a senior adviser to Obama in his campaign for the White House, taking a lead role in the $450 million advertising effort and helping direct the campaign as a member of the core strategic team. He was also co-managing producer of the official four-day presidential inaugural.

Margolis’ company GMMB served as the lead agency for Bill Clinton’s presidential campaign in 1992.

Nationally, Margolis has earned one of the best win/loss records of any political consultant in the nation. In 2010 — during one of the toughest environments for Democrats in recent history — Margolis led the advertising efforts and helped secure victories for Senate Leader Harry Reid, D-Nev.; Sen. Barbara Boxer, D-Calif.; and Sen. Ron Wyden, D-Ore.

Sen. Max Baucus, D-Mont., Sen. Kent Conrad, D-N.D., Sen. Byron Dorgan, D-N.D., Sen. Robert Menendez, D-N.J., Sen. Mark Warner, D-Va., and Gov. Jim Doyle, D-Wis., are also among the statewide elected officials who count on Margolis for strategic advice and media production.

Overseas, Margolis has helped direct presidential and prime ministerial contests in Latin America, Africa, Central America and Asia.

Nonprofit and corporate clients represent another important dimension of Margolis’ work. The Robert Wood Johnson Foundation, Cisco Systems, the Kaiser Family Foundation, the Communication Workers of America, AFSCME, the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, AT&T, FINRA, the Corporation for National and Community Service, the Discovery Channel and many state and federal agencies are among the clients for whom Margolis has served as a senior adviser and consultant.

Over the years, Margolis has been honored with dozens of awards as well as national and international recognition for his work. Before joining GMMB, Margolis served as a top appointee in both the U.S. Senate and U.S. House of Representativs.

Margolis was at the Dole Institute last fall as a panelist for the 2010 Post-Election Conference.
