KU gallery to showcase student, faculty works throughout spring semester

LAWRENCE — Original student and faculty art will adorn the walls of the Art and Design Gallery at the University of Kansas throughout the spring semester, starting Jan. 23.

The spring schedule begins with the Graduate Student Exhibition, which will feature works created by first- and second-year graduate students in the Department of Visual Art in the School of the Arts. The department is nationally recognized for excellence in its graduate programs. The show will be on view through Feb. 4.

Following the graduate student exhibition, the gallery will host 11 more public exhibitions with pieces created by students at the undergraduate and graduate levels and current and emeritus faculty.

A range of disciplines from the School of the Arts and the School of Architecture, Design and Planning will be represented during the spring semester. Examples of ceramics, expanded media, graphic design, jewelry, metalsmithing, painting, printmaking, sculpture and textiles will be on view throughout the spring exhibition schedule.

All listed exhibitions are free and open to the public.

Feb. 6-18, Emeritus Faculty Exhibition. The show will feature works created by 10 emeritus faculty from the School of the Arts’ Department of Visual Art and the Department of Design in the School of Architecture, Design and Planning.

Feb. 20-March 4, Visual Art Faculty Exhibition. Pieces created by more than 20 faculty members in the Department of Visual Art will be shown.

March 6-April 15, master’s of fine arts student exhibitions. All featured students are pursuing graduate degrees in the Department of Visual Art.

— March 6-11: Safiya Carter-Thompson, textiles
— March 15-22: Todd Pospichal, expanded media, and Will Vannerson, sculpture
— March 27-April 1: Tim Dwyer, printmaking, and Eugenia Ortiz, textiles
— April 3-8: Rebecca Barton, metalsmithing, and Cody McLouth, painting
— April 10-15: Geoff Kunkler, ceramics, and David Platter, sculpture

April 17-22, Visual Communication Student Scholarship Exhibition. The work of students majoring in visual communication in the Department of Design will be on display.

April 24-29, Annual Installation Art Student Exhibition. Undergraduate students in the Department of Visual Art will show their pieces.

May 1-3, Visual Art Scholarship Exhibition. The show will feature undergraduate and graduate students in the Department of Visual Art who have been selected to receive scholarships based on performance in their major. Graduate work will be on display through May 6.

May 21-25, Undergraduate Senior Exhibition. Senior majors in the Department of Visual Art will display their work.

The Art and Design Gallery is located on the third floor of the Art and Design Building, at the northeast corner of 15th Street and Naismith Drive. It is open 10 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Monday-Wednesday, 10 a.m. to 9 p.m. Thursday, 10 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. Friday and 1 to 4:30 p.m. Sunday. Visitor parking is available at the Allen Fieldhouse Parking Garage, 1501 Irving Hill Road.
