Kansas Public Health Association honors two KU-Wichita medical faculty

WICHITA – Suzanne Hawley and Elizabeth Ablah received awards at the Kansas Public Health Association’s annual conference, which was Sept. 22 in Wichita.
Dr. Hawley, associate professor and Master of Public Health (MPH) program director on the Wichita Campus, received the Samuel J. Crumbine Medal. The highest award given by the KPHA is presented for meritorious service and state, regional or national recognition related to the improvement of the health of Kansans and/or the environment of the state.
A doctorate holder, she joined the KU School of Medicine–Wichita in 2003 as an assistant professor, eventually receiving tenure and promotion. She now administers the MPH program on the Wichita campus as the Wichita site director. In this position, she has helped develop MPH concentration areas and planned for a KU School of Public Health.
Dr. Ablah, assistant professor and Master of Science in Clinical Research (MSCR) director, received the Special Service award, which recognizes individuals who have rendered outstanding service to Kansas in the interest of public health and/or environmental improvement.
She also joined the KU School of Medicine–Wichita’s Preventive Medicine and Public Health department in 2003. Dr. Ablah, who has a doctorate, has worked her way up from a research associate to assistant professor and leads numerous research projects, teaches in both the MPH and the MSCR programs, and supervises student capstone projects. In recent years, she has spearheaded significant research efforts into the city of Wichita’s environmental landscape.
